Good news is our daily average is down! Thank you, South East Asia!!! Our spending in Thailand could have been even lower if we had done a little more planning prior to getting to the country. Even without the advance planning, a few last minute domestic flights that *should* have been overnight trains, and packing in so much stuff in the 29 days we were here, I’d say we did pretty good.
Some notes:
- Flights was our most expensive category at $1,282. We took a total of 3 domestic flights in Thailand and the one international flight from Jordan. Of the $1,282 we were able to save $842 from using credit card points so our net cost for flights in Thailand was actually $440.34 (and also included a $51 fee for having overweight luggage. The airlines in this region are no joke when it comes to weighing EVERYTHING)
- This won’t apply to you guys, but we traveled to Thailand at the very end of their 1-night mandatory quarantine upon arrival. That night cost $256. But we balanced it out with much cheaper accommodating along the way, going as low as $15/night.
- Food in Thailand can be as cheap as $2 for a street pad Thai. And it’ll probably be the best pad thai of your life. Also, don’t sleep on mall food courts.
- Getting around between cities/towns cost us decent bit. Speedboats to islands cost quite a bit too since there may only be 1 operator running the route, so they can hike up the prices a little bit. Speedboat to Koh Yao Noi was $66, getting from Khao Sok National Park to Koh Phi Phi was $75, and a speedboat from Railay to Krabi was $47.
- This was also the first country we started to use our credit card points. We redeemed 84,180 points from Bank of America Travel Rewards to offset the flight to Thailand. (I don’t recommend using a card like this for getting the most for your points, however here are the cards I would recommend)
